New Brazil Squad: questionable at best

May 19, 2011

Jadson in action against Scotland last March: hardly an impressive player, but he's back...

Brazil boss Mano Menezes has just announced his long list of 28 players that will face Holland (June 4th, in Brazil) and Romania (June 7th, also in Brazil), in preparations for this year’s Copa America.

The list will be chopped down to 22 after the friendly against Romania, before the team heads to Argentina for the South American tournament.

In all honesty, this is my least favourite list by Mano so far. Some of the names included defy all logic, and other obvious choices were ignored with the same level of ignorance.

The biggest surprises were the re-introduction of striker Fred, who hasn’t played with the national side in four years, and the inclusion of playmaker Thiago Neves.

This Selecao‘s biggest issue is creativity. Mano still lacks a proper number 10, a midfield maestro, and since he insists on playing a passing style of game (a poor imitation of Barcelona’s or Spain’s tippy-tappy through the middle), his squad will continue to struggle until players like Ganso and Kaka are back and fully fit.

Perhaps that would explain the selection of Thiago Neves…although he’s hardly a Xavi…

Amongst the inexplicable absentees, we have Lazio’s Hernanes and Porto’s Hulk. Both players have had a tremendously successful season in Europe, and fans have loudly criticized Mano for not including them on his list.

On the other hand, the selection of Cruzeiro’s keeper Fabio is a pleasant surprise. Finally, the best keeper in the Brazilian league has gained his much deserved call-up. As is the inclusion of Sao Paulo’s Lucas Moura, a dazzling and zippy midfielder. Lucas and Neymar showed great chemistry when they played (and won) the latest U20 South American championship together.

Moreover, legendary retired-striker Ronaldo will make a quick cameo in the match against Romania as part of his farewell tribute celebrations. Mano has explained that Ronaldo will come on in the first half of the match, play for about 15 minutes, and then he’ll be honoured during a half-time ceremony. When the Selecao returns for the second half, he’ll no longer be in the squad. This is our last chance to see him in that golden jersey…

This is my prediction for Brazil’s starting XI: Julio Cesar. Dani Alves, Lucio (C), Thiago Silva, Andre Santos. Ramires, Lucas Leiva, Elano and Thiago Neves. Neymar and Pato.

And these are the players I believe will be dropped, following the two friendlies: Victor, Henrique, Anderson, Nilmar, Fred and Jadson.

And my biggest prediction: Brazil will not will the Copa America. Mano’s team still is very immature and inconsistent.

The road towards 2014 is a very long and treacherous one…

The complete list =

Julio Cesar (Internazionale)
Victor (Grêmio)
Jefferson (Botafogo)
Fábio (Cruzeiro)

Daniel Alves (Barcelona)
Maicon (Internazionale)

I would like Mano as he mention that k aka does`nt want play for copa America ,but let him be immediately when his fit to take care of the midfield as the general along side with elano plus gano there you will see a very compatible team ,deserving to win any competition.
